Work At Tema-Harbour Grinds To A Halt.

Work at the Tema Port has come to a halt due to an Industrial action embarked upon by Casual workers of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.The workers action is said to have been adopted to back their call for the payment of salary arrears, which have been outstanding since May. They have vowed not to return to work until they are settled In full.

At a meeting with the workers at the port on Wednesday, the Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Mr. Owusu Mensah, explained that the problem has arisen due to lack of effective communication between the workers and management of the company. He said Port management has decided to sub-contract the of the cocoa sheds at the Port to other companies to manage.

In view of this, the GPHA can only maintain 35 per cent of the casual workers while the Antrak Group of companies has undertaken to absorb the remaining 65 per cent. Land- locked countries such as Burkina Fasso and Mali who use the Tema-Port have threatened to use Togo should the action continue.
