The Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has disclosed that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has embarked on a hunger strike in protest of his detention.

Providing the update on Friday, May 30, 2025, in an interview on Peace FM, Annoh-Dompreh stated that Chairman Wontumi personally made the decision to go on a hunger strike following his arrest and continued detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He added that Wontumi has not eaten since his arrest on May 27, 2025, three days ago, and remains steadfast in his resolve.

“… The truth is that he [Wontumi] says he is will not eat and has not eaten since his arrest. In fact that is a decision he has taken upon himself and it’s a hunger strike,” he said.

The lawmaker, who also serves as the Minority Chief Whip, added that doctors and authorities have failed to disclose the extent of the chairman’s ill health or his current whereabouts to his legal team, leaving them unaware of his condition and recovery status.

“The doctors have been tight lipped and when we ask questions, they don’t provide any helpful information. What we know is that he was taken to the BNI clinic close to the Immigration head office for medical attention but as to how he is faring and the drugs being administered to him, we don’t know. They are not allowing his lawyers and us to even see and check on him. Has he killed anyone?” he added.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem Sai, has disclosed that Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for multiple criminal offences.

These include fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering.

In a statement posted on social media on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Justice Srem Sai revealed that Wontumi, who has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) since Tuesday, is also implicated in a second strand of investigation linked to a broader international organised crime scheme.
