The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed an application at the High Court in Accra to have his bank accounts defrozen.
A video sighted by GhanaWeb showed an upbeat Wontumi arriving at the High Court with his lawyer, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, to file the application on Thursday, November 13, 2025.
In a brief remark, Appiah-Kubi, a former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, said, “Today, we are going to move an application to defreeze [the accounts].”
It can be recalled that the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) froze the bank accounts of Chairman Wontumi, who is currently being prosecuted by the state in two separate cases for allegedly engaging in illegal mining, in April 2025.
FIC freezes bank accounts of Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining
Information available to GhanaWeb indicates that all bank accounts associated with the embattled mining firm, Akonta Mining, have been frozen by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC).
The FIC, according to a document sighted by GhanaWeb, is acting in accordance with Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020.

“In accordance with Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), you are hereby directed to immediately freeze all accounts in relation to and in association with the above-named subjects pending further directives,” parts of a letter from the FIC to the relevant financial institutions read.
