Wontumi Arrest: Only Bryan Acheampong brought a competent document for surety – Appiah-Kubi

Lawyer for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has maintained that he acted professionally in executing his duties as counsel for Chairman Wontumi, particularly in securing his client’s release on bail.

According to him, his priority was securing bail for his client, and he therefore focused on identifying anyone who met the stated bail conditions and could stand as a surety to facilitate his client’s release, not because he had any ulterior motives, as has been speculated.

He refuted claims from a section of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members that his client’s arrest and detention were used as a ploy to promote an individual who has declared their intention to contest the party’s flagbearership.

“That I have been engaged as counsel outside the party and I'm doing the work as counsel, not that we are doing politics or we are working within the party. I was engaged as counsel in this criminal matter and I have discharged my responsibilities equitably in my capacity as counsel.

“In what way would I support and de-support somebody in this process of preparing a justification to file? In what way? Whoever said that doesn't understand the dynamics. I was desperate and I needed somebody to provide the justification for me to execute my bail and I advertised profusely for people to come and support that initiative,” he told GhanaWeb’s George Ayisi on June 4, 2025.

Appiah-Kubi further added, “It is only the honorable Dr Bryan Acheampong who brought me a competent and qualified document for the purpose of securing bail for my client. There was another surety called George Oduro on record and nobody brought me any competent document to use apart from Dr Bryan Acheampong.”

Chairman Wontumi was released by EOCO on Monday, June 2, 2025, after meeting his bail conditions, with assistance from Bryan Acheampong, the former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, who stood as one of his sureties.

Additionally, a motion to appeal Wontumi's GH¢50 million bail condition was formally withdrawn by his legal team on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Originally submitted on May 30, 2025, to the High Court in Accra, the motion was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3. But on Monday, June 2, it was withdrawn one day earlier.

On Wednesday, May 28, two justifiable sureties were added to his bail. The bail requirements were met by Friday, May 30, according to his legal team, which was headed by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi.

His lawyers claimed that the ongoing application for bail review was filed without his express authorization, which is why his release was postponed even though he complied with the requirements.
