Winneba College gets tractor - Mampong

Mampong (Ashanti Region), 25 Jan. '99,

The Valco Trust Fund has donated a four-cylinder tractor and accessories which valued at 98 million cedis to the Asante Mampong Campus of the University College of Education of Winneba (UCEW). The Executive Director for the Fund, Mr Emmanuel Bruce Ayeh said it attaches great importance to the teaching of agricultural science hence the donation to the only University mandated to train Agricultural Science Teachers. Mr Ayeh urged the University authorities to give prominence to the practical component of the University's curriculum so that its products will acquire the skills and knowledge needed to make the youth develop positive attitude towards farming and choose agriculture as a vocation. The Principal of UCEW, Professor J. Anamuah-Mensah who received the keys to the tractor expressed gratitude to the Fund for the donation to Mampong Campus, which he observed would help to beef up the equipment support needed for training agricultural science teachers. He said the tractor would be maintained regularly and used for the purpose for which it was donated. Problems the Mampong Campus is contending with included, lack of irrigation equipment, poor library facilities and ill-equipped science laboratory. The Principal in this vein appealed to philanthropists, chiefs and non-governmental organisation (NGOs) to assist the University, which was integrated into the University College in January 1996.
