Morgue attendants at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital initially refused to accept a decomposing body from Nkontompo on Friday, 14 November 2025, citing the advanced state of decay and the overpowering stench.

According to a report by 3news.com, “The dispute began on Friday, 14 November 2025, when the body of a local man, known as Uncle Kofi [alias Alright], was discovered in his room after a foul odor had permeated the area.”

Despite attempts to transport the body to the mortuary, the attendants returned it to the community, sparking public outrage.

The body remained exposed until a second intervention by the police and the Metropolitan Environmental Health Office, who eventually ensured it was safely conveyed to the mortuary for appropriate storage.

The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Christian Baidoo, later explained that the remains had not been prepared according to standard protocol and that environmental health officers should have been involved from the onset to manage the highly decomposed body safely.

He noted, “The community ought to have involved the environmental health officers from the beginning to properly handle the decomposing body before bringing it to the mortuary.”
