The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike effective Friday, September 19, 2025.

According to the group, the government has failed to address long-standing concerns of non-teaching staff across the education sector, despite exhausting all laid-down procedures.

In a statement issued on September 16, 2025, and signed by the General Secretary, King James Azortibah, TEWU said it had exercised patience, followed due process, and exhausted all legal channels under the Labour Act, yet government and its agencies have failed to meet their demands.

"The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC (Ghana), hereby formally declares an indefinite strike action effective Friday, 19th September 2025. All TEWU members across the country are directed to stay at home until further notice.

"This decision has become inevitable due to government and employer institutions’ persistent failure to address long-standing concerns of non-teaching staff despite exhausting all laid-down legal and procedural requirements," it said.

The union stressed that the ultimate responsibility of any disruption in the sector lies with the government.

"We have followed due process and exhausted all legal requirements under the Labour Act of Ghana. The responsibility for the disruption of industrial peace in the education sector rests squarely with Government and its agencies," the statement noted.

TEWU’s demands include the immediate signing of conditions of service for junior staff in public and technical universities, non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), and staff of the Ghana Library Authority and Museums and Monuments Board.

TEWU is also pushing for the inclusion of non-teaching staff of the GES in the Continuous Professional Development Allowance, as well as, the resolution of long-standing promotion grievances.

The union further accused the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) of delaying negotiations and failing to conclude agreements, urging the Commission to sign all outstanding conditions of service without delay.

"The FWSC must conclude and sign all Conditions of Service without further delays or excuses," the statement said.

TEWU warned employers against intimidating staff who decide to participate in the strike.

"All employers should note that, it shall constitute an unfair labour practice should any employer prevent or intimidate any of our members; non-teaching staff of the GES, Public and Technical Universities, Ghana Library Authority, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board from exercising their lawful right to strike," the statement added.
