The Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu VII, has appealed to the government to urgently upgrade the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho, now officially the Ho Teaching Hospital since 2019, describing the facility as a “death trap” despite its elevated status.

Speaking to the media during a working visit on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, he stated that the hospital’s upgraded status as a teaching and referral facility does not match its current infrastructure, logistics, and medical equipment.

According to Togbega Gabusu VII, although the hospital now serves as a regional referral centre, several critical departments continue to operate with obsolete equipment, congested wards, and overstretched facilities — conditions he said endanger both patients and health workers.

“The hospital indeed is a death trap. It's now fit for a place where patients have to be attended to, but unfortunately, the facilities we have seen today are not adequate for regional hospital or teaching hospital status.

“These are facilities meant for district hospitals. As a matter of urgency, we are calling on the authorities; our Municipal Chief Executive, the Member of Parliament, the regional minister, and the health minister to act. We, the people of the Gbi Traditional Area, have available land which can be used for expanding the hospital infrastructure,” he remarked.

Despite its 2019 upgrade to a teaching hospital, the facility remains under-equipped and continues to serve as the main referral hospital in the Volta Region.
