A General Surgeon at the Breast Cancer Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr Josephine Nsaful, has called for the establishment of more cancer centres across the country to help manage the rising number of breast cancer cases.
In a citinewsroom.com report on December 8, 2025, Dr Nsaful disclosed that the Breast Cancer Unit at Korle Bu receives a minimum of 600 new cases every year, placing enormous pressure on the facility.
“We see approximately 600 new cases of breast cancer every year, in addition to those already living with the disease. It is quite concerning and alarming. We are overwhelmed by the large number of patients we have to attend to,” she said.

She noted that the unit now records some of the longest clinic days within the surgical department due to the heavy workload, adding that expanding cancer services beyond teaching hospitals would help reduce the burden and improve access to care.
“It will help if we have more cancer centres across the country so that some burden is lifted from teaching hospitals and, more importantly, cancer care becomes accessible to Ghanaians,” she added.
Breast cancer survivor and Founder of the Dzidula Breast Cancer Foundation, Fafa Gozo, also appealed for stronger private-sector support, saying many patients face severe financial challenges that disrupt their treatment.

“I have people here who, because of stigmatisation, do not want to be interviewed, but believe you me, they are going through a lot of financial challenges. Their treatment is often interrupted. The government cannot do it alone,” she said, the report added.
