Why Chris Asher Was Not Arrested

Interior Minister, Hackman Owusu Agyeman says the self-confessed jail breaker, Chris Asher was not arrested when he came to Ghana recently because, it would have sent a wrong signal to other exiled Ghanaians who would want to testify before the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC).

Mr Asher was granted safe passage from arrest and prosecution to enable him to testify before the National Reconciliation Commission. During his stay in the country, a family from Oda in the Eastern Region accused him of murder and called for his immediate arrest.

However, Interior Minister, Hackman Owusu Agyeman told JOY FM that any attempt to arrest Mr Asher would have been inexpedient. He admitted that Mr Asher overstayed his immunity but said his arrest would have deterred other people who have intentions of appearing before the Commission from doing so.

This, according to the Interior Minister, would have put the Reconciliation process in jeopardy. Mr Owusu Agyeman conceded that Mr Asher broke jail, but insisted that there was no need for his arrest because no charge of murder has been brought against him.
