Former Asante Mampong Member of Parliament and two-time New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearer aspirant, Ing Francis Addai-Nimo, has revealed that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was unhappy with his decision to contest him in the party's 2014 presidential primaries.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM on October 26, 2026, Addai-Nimo explained that, at the time, he was the only aspirant who had not been appointed to a government position during the tenure of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

According to him, Akufo-Addo questioned his decision to challenge him in the primaries.

"What I heard was, 'Who dares you, Addai-Nimo, to contest Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2014 primaries? Who are you?'" he said.

Addai-Nimo noted that despite the alleged hostility surrounding his decision to contest, he eventually joined Akufo-Addo's campaign after the latter won the primaries.

He explained that his experience demonstrated how people could be looked down upon when they were not well known or did not occupy influential positions.

"If someone doesn't know you, the person looks down on you. In 2014, when we were going for the contest, I was the only person during President Kufuor's tenure without a position. We had ministers and other people serving in the government," he said.

He further recounted an encounter with Akufo-Addo during a campaign tour of the Upper East Region.

"Afterwards, I joined the campaign, and later, during one of the trips to the Upper East Region, after Akufo-Addo had spoken, I also spoke. He came to shake my hand and told me that I had done well," he added.

Akufo-Addo subsequently won the 2016 presidential election and served two terms as President of Ghana, leaving office in January 2025.
