The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has stressed that Ghana’s future prosperity will be shaped by the level of investment and attention given to education today.

Speaking at the Leadership for Foundational Learning Policy Dialogue on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Prof Davis underscored the transformative power of education, describing it as a critical tool for national development and responsible citizenship.

“It is what we put into education today that will determine how we will live tomorrow,” he stated, emphasising the long-term impact of educational policies and decisions.

According to him, education goes beyond academic knowledge, serving as a means to equip students with the skills, values, and attitudes necessary to become responsible citizens and future leaders. He noted that the country’s ability to harness and refine talents depends largely on the strength of its educational system.

Prof Davis warned that the future of the nation cannot be separated from the quality of education it provides, adding that the current generation has a responsibility to adequately prepare the next.

“I cannot see the future of the nation without education,” he said, stressing that the legacy of today’s leaders will be judged by how well they position the younger generation.

Touching on foundational learning, the GES Director-General described it as the bedrock upon which all higher levels of education are built. He cautioned that a weak foundation would ultimately undermine the entire education system, drawing a comparison to a building that cannot stand without a solid base.

“We cannot build if the foundation is weak,” he noted.

To address this, Prof Davis revealed that the Ghana Education Service has restructured its Schools and Instruction Division to place greater emphasis on foundational learning. The division has now been split into secondary and pre-secondary units to allow for more targeted supervision and interventions.

He added that a dedicated director has been appointed to monitor activities at the kindergarten and primary school levels, ensuring timely data collection and informed decision-making.

The policy dialogue brought together key stakeholders in the education sector to discuss strategies for strengthening foundational learning and improving outcomes across the country.

Prof Davis concluded by urging deliberate and sustained efforts in education, noting that meaningful progress requires planning and consistent monitoring rather than short-term interventions.
