What we know so far in Afenyo-Markin, police officer brouhaha

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, became the center of public discussions during and after the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration on May 5, 2025.

The protest, which sought to prevent the president from removing the head of the judiciary, sparked mixed reactions across various circles.

However, one of the most talked-about moments emerged when a video surfaced showing Afenyo-Markin knocking a police officer on the head, igniting further debates.

But what exactly provoked Afenyo-Markin?

According to the Minority Leader in Parliament, the confrontation was instigated by a police officer who struck him as he attempted to join his colleagues at Parliament House.

He narrated that upon arriving at Parliament House, he noticed that the NPP’s National Organiser, along with other party leaders, had already been granted access.

Consequently, the party’s Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, invited him and the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, to join them.

However, as he attempted to do so, a police officer identified as Constable Forson, allegedly struck the left side of his chest with the full force of his right palm, delivering a direct blow near his heart.

Afenyo-Markin eventually issued an official statement condemning the police officer involved in the altercation.

Visibly shaken and short of breath

The Effutu MP further explained that the force of the officer's strike caused him to visibly tremble and even struggle to catch his breath.

He stated that he felt compelled to question the officer about why he had chosen to harm him, despite having done nothing to provoke such an action.

Afenyo-Markin added that with the assistance of other police officers and national service personnel, he was helped to lean against a wall in an effort to regain his strength.

"The impact dazed me, and I was visibly shaken and short of breath. In that moment, I spontaneously protested his conduct, asking why he would seek to harm me,” he added.

Official complaint to police

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has also announced that he has filed an official complaint against the said officer to demand a full investigation into the conduct of the police officer.

Police invites Afenyo-Markin

The Ghana Police Service has also announced that it has invited Afenyo-Markin to assist with investigations following allegations that he assaulted a police officer during a demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, in Accra.

According to the police, following a review of the incident, the service has written to the Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Afenyo-Markin to assist in the ongoing investigation.
