What men need to know about Candida Balanitis

Candida balanitis, also known as male yeast infection, is a fungal infection of the genital caused by a yeast called Candida.

One of the common symptoms of this infection is a red, itchy rash on the head (glans) of the genital and can be uncomfortable if not treated early.

Yeast infections are common in women reproductive health but men can also contract it.

This GhanaWeb article provides insight on what candida balanitis is and how to prevent it.

What is a male yeast infection?

A male yeast infection occurs when candida, a fungus that naturally lives on the skin especially in warm, moist areas overgrows and causes inflammation of the genital.

Who does Candida Balanitis affect?

Candida balanitis can affect males of any age.

• About 1 in 25 men will develop the condition at some point in their lifetime.

• It affects approximately 1 in every 30 uncircumcised men.

• Children under age 4 and uncircumcised males are at the highest risk.

• The condition is more common in people with phimosis, a condition where the foreskin cannot be pulled back over the head of the genital.

• As children grow older usually after age 5 the foreskin becomes easier to retract, reducing the risk.

Risk factors

You may be more likely to develop candida balanitis if you:

• Are uncircumcised

• Use antibiotics for a long time

• Have diabetes

Prevention Measures

• Maintain good genital hygiene

• Keep the area clean and completely dry, especially under the foreskin

• Wear loose, breathable underwear

• Avoid scented soaps, shower gels, and harsh bath products

• Use condoms during casual sex to reduce transmission risk
