President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed speculation that he intends to consolidate authoritarian powers following the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Speaking at the Presidential Media Encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, President Mahama laughed off the suggestions, insisting he remains committed to Ghana's constitutional order and democratic governance.

"Look in my face, do I look like a supreme leader?" he joked, borrowing a phrase once used by the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

"I'm a democrat through and through. Even when we attained two-thirds of Parliament, I said we were not going to use it to ride roughshod over the minority. We are going to give an opportunity for democracy to flourish."

His remarks followed questions about whether his legacy term might embolden him to make amendments to the Constitution that could favour him in office.

The media engagement also came in the wake of the controversial dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo on September 1, 2025.

She was removed from office in line with Article 146(9) of the Constitution, after a committee established under Article 146(6) recommended her removal following a petition by a citizen, Daniel Ofori.
