West African Countries Urged To Minimize Post-Harvest Loses Of Fish

Accra,(Greater Accra) 24 Oct. The two-day seminar on ways to reduce post- harvest losses in fish ended in Accra today with a call on governments in the sub-region to give moral and financial support to the West Africa regional programme on improvement of post-harvest utilization of artisanal fish catches. The participants said to enable governments offer any help there is the need to involve various fisheries administrators from the region in activities of the programme. The participants, drawn from Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire and Benin, observed that the involvement of the fisheries administrators would enable the governments to avail themselves of activities of the programme. They said the West African Association for the Development of the Artisanal Fisheries (WADAF) which is the implementing agency of the programme should provide information on activities and budget to its associate members. The participants called for the nomination of national co- ordinators from various national fisheries administrations to monitor activities of WADAF and its associate members. The technical Secretariat and national co-ordinators should meet annually to review events in every country and solve problems where they exist, the participants said.
