'We will resign if conflict is not resolved' - Bawku NDC executives to government

Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from six constituencies within the Bawku enclave, Zebilla, Garu, Bawku Central, Binduri, Tempane, and Pusiga have threatened to suspend all party activities and resign if the government does not take immediate action to resolve the escalating Bawku conflict.

The warning follows renewed violence in the area sparked by allegations that military personnel destroyed a statue of the overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Naaba Abugrago Azoka II.

Addressing the press on Wednesday,July 16, 2025, the NDC's Bawku Central Constituency Communications Officer, Yusuf Otumba, demanded an independent probe into the civilian deaths caused by military operations in the area.

“As the frontline leaders and campaigners of the NDC in Kusaug, our lives are now under serious threat, not only from the violence but also from the growing frustration of our people, who now see us as enablers of a system that has completely betrayed them,” he stated.

Otumba noted that the region’s NDC leadership is increasingly being viewed with suspicion by their constituents, who feel abandoned and unprotected.

He expressed regret that despite their loyalty and commitment, the government has failed to uphold justice and peace in the area.

“We can no longer continue risking our lives and integrity for a government that appears to have little regard for our people, our leaders, or the policies we advocated on its behalf. Inaction is betrayal, and betrayal has consequences. If nothing is done, we, the entire NDC executives in the Kusaug Traditional Area, will resign. We refuse to be complicit in this great injustice,” he warned.

Otumba further condemned the alleged desecrated the authority and image of traditional leadership in the area.

"On July 13, 2025, we woke up to what can only be described as a state-sponsored assault, not only on civilians, but on the very soul and authority of our traditional leadership. In an appalling and indefensible act, the military dedicated the image of our revered overlord," he added.

Meanwhile, the Majority Leader in Parliament Mahama Ayariga has made a desperate appeal to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to expedite action on the Bawku peace talks, as tensions in the conflict-torn enclave continue to claim lives.

The prolonged Bawku conflict has resulted in significant violence, displacements, and the loss of lives, threatening socio-economic development in the Upper East Region.
