We will not allow resurgence of vigilantism – Muntaka assures

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has assured the public that the Mahama administration will not allow a resurgence of vigilante activities, following violent incidents that disrupted the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on July 14, 2025, he disclosed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been directed to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“We will not allow the resurgence of vigilantism. The IGP has been directed to investigate and bring the perpetrators to book,” he said.

The voting process at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station was suspended after chaos erupted.

According to eyewitness reports, a group of unidentified thugs arrived in a pickup vehicle and forcibly entered the polling centre, despite the presence of police officers.

The group then proceeded to the main voting area and began assaulting individuals at the scene. Among those attacked was former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The violent disruption affected voting across 19 polling stations in the constituency and has reignited public concern about electoral violence and political vigilantism.

The Interior Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting the integrity of Ghana’s electoral processes.
