'We’re on a suicidal path if galamsey isn’t stopped' - Ablakwa

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly cautioned against the severe risks posed by illegal mining, popularly known as "galamsey."

He stressed the critical need to tackle this issue without delay.

His remarks follow appeals from religious organisations and civil society groups urging a state of emergency to address the problem.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Ablakwa emphasised that; “Let me be honest with you, when it comes to galamsey, I believe we can do better. I stand by all the suggestions I’ve made in the past. We’re heading down a self-destructive path if we don’t put an end to this. We need to take this matter seriously and win this fight.”

On this subject, President John Dramani Mahama has stated that a state of emergency would be considered only as a last resort.

Meanwhile, the minister expressed confidence in the president's dedication to resolving the issue and believes the government will succeed.

Ablakwa also stated that the most fitting tribute to the eight state officials who lost their lives in the helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, is for the nation to succeed in the battle against galamsey.
