President John Dramani Mahama has reminded Ghana’s security agencies that their foremost duty is to protect citizens and ensure their safety.
Speaking at a brief ceremony at Jubilee House on June 23, 2025, President Mahama expressed gratitude to security personnel for their GH¢1 million donation to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares.
The donation, led by the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, came from eleven agencies under the Ministry, including the Ghana Police Service, Fire Service, Immigration Service, Prisons Service, and others.
Muntaka described the gesture as a shared commitment to health, noting that illness knows no boundaries.
President Mahama confirmed Cabinet’s approval of a bill to formalise the Fund, which will soon go to Parliament. An independent trustee will oversee the Fund to ensure transparency, with increased public education on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The President also announced a GH¢1 billion allocation to retool the security services for improved performance.
“MahamaCares will support specialist treatment for cancers, strokes, heart diseases, and kidney conditions not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme,” President Mahama said, adding that the initiative is crucial as NCDs account for over 40% of deaths in Ghana.
He praised the security agencies for extending their duty of protection to also safeguarding the health of Ghanaians, especially in a period of rising security concerns and public health challenges.
