We need special protection from the security- NPP

Members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will petition for special protection from the police administration for some of its executives.

The intended action follows recent attacks on three of its bigwigs by suspected armed robbers within a month.

Speaking on an Accra based radio station, its National Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey revealed that the party strongly believes the attacks are meant to “intimidate” party followers, as the 2012 general election approaches.

He said the party has cause to worry as a result of what was contained on the leaked tape on Yaw Boateng Gyan, the National Organiser of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and comments made by presidential staffer, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye.

“We are extremely worried about the attacks because we all know what is on the Yaw Boateng Gyan tape, and also comments made by Nii Lantey Vanderpuye... And so we will be calling upon the Minister of Interior to give proper protection to NPP senior members. We can’t help these harassments and intimidations going on.”

Continuing, he alleged that a member of the party, John Kumah, was “told by EOCO that he should stop attacking the government positions on radio and if he stops that, the case against him will disappear, then you will know that there is a real concerted move among the people who in areas that are to protect the citizen.”

The NPP National Chairman however mentioned that the party is not accusing the ruling NDC saying, “I am not going to point fingers at anybody but I am going to say that it falls within our suspicion that there was going to be massive intimidation and if it is not stopped, it will go to prove that massive intimidation was strategically put into operation by our opponents.”
