We gave Redco squatters time to move – Police

Director of Operations of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Chief Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, has revealed that the slum occupants at the Adenta Redco Flats who were evicted over the weekend, were given one month notice by the La Nkwantanan Madina Municipal Assembly before the exercise.

According to him, that area served as a hideout for criminals, therefore the need to flatten those structures.

More than 1,000 unauthorised structures in a slum near the Adenta Redco Flats were Sunday demolished to rid the area of suspected criminals.

The operation was carried out by the police in collaboration with the La Nkwantanan Madina Municipal Assembly.

The 10-hour exercise was undertaken by 100 policemen drawn from various formations within the Accra Regional Police Command.

The place is said to house between 4,000 and 5,000 persons including Ghanaians, Nigerians, Ivoirians and other foreign nationals.

Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM hosted by Chief Jerry Forson on Monday, May 7, DSP Kwasi Ofori said: “The La Nkwantanan Municipal Assembly warned the occupants to leave the area because there was going to be a demolition exercise. And so the assembly gave them over 1-month notice before the exercise.”

“That area has been the hideout for criminals who have been tormenting residents and so we needed to take the action to deal with it,” he said.
