'We don't blindly approve government decisions' - Majority Leader Ayariga

The Majority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has emphasised that the Majority Caucus does not simply endorse policies brought forward by the government, insisting that every proposal undergoes thorough scrutiny before approval.

Speaking in an interview shared on social media, Ayariga noted that while recent macroeconomic indicators point to improvements, the real test lies in how these gains impact ordinary Ghanaians across communities.

He highlighted a number of positive developments, including declining fuel prices, falling food costs, and reduced utility tariffs. According to him, several taxes have also been lowered, while interest rates in the banking sector are gradually easing.

“I want to admit that the micro-indicators are good and you want to see how it translates in the streets and on the farms and in the villages. It's already obvious, I mean, fuel prices have been coming down, food prices have been coming down, utility prices have been coming down and indeed a lot of the taxes have also been coming down. Interest rates in the banks have been coming down,” he said.

Ayariga further pointed to the relative stability of the Ghanaian cedi, noting that the currency has held firm against major international currencies, contributing to improved living conditions.

Despite these gains, the Majority Leader stressed that the Caucus remains committed to accountability and due diligence. He explained that the Majority’s approach is guided by a conscious effort to maintain credibility in the eyes of the public.

“So, I think that the least you could do is to commend us for what we have achieved so far within a period of one year, that we as a majority, we don't blindly approve things brought by our government.

“We also go through a rigorous scrutiny because we have taken a decision that even though we have an overwhelming Majority but our chances of remaining an overwhelming majority will depend on how credible we are as a caucus, “he said.

Ayariga added that the long-term political strength of the Majority will depend on its integrity and performance.
