We arrested deviant teacher trainees to restore sanity - Police

Ministries District Police Commander, Superintendent Florence Owusu has justified the arrest of about 10 unposted teacher trainees who thronged the premises of the Ghana Education Service (GES) unlawfully.

According to her, the action taken by the police to arrest the leaders of the group who incited their colleagues to picket the ministry was to serve as a deterrent, as well as, bring sanity in the premises.

Detailing why the group, Coalition of Unposted Trained Teachers besieged the GES, to GhanaWeb, Superintendent Florence Owusu noted that, the demonstrators had received text messages on their phones which they claimed was from GES but upon further investigations, it appeared to be fake.

Speaking to GhanaWeb’s Ernestina Serwaa Asante, she indicated that “they were here as early as 4am today but we had information yesterday that the trainees are planning to picket this morning so we came here, met them and asked them their mission and they told us that they received information from the GES that they are to report today at 6 am to process their documents for postings”.

“We followed up on that information and then we were informed by GES that they never sent out any information to that effect so then we asked them to leave the premises looking at their number…around 60, 70 and today is Monday, we have 4 or 5 ministries here, people have come to work so we pleaded with them to leave and that if they have anything to do, they can go back and strategise, notify the police and they come."

After confronting them, the Superintendent averred that the leaders of the group incited the rest not to leave and this deviant behaviour called for their arrest.

However, she didn't give any timelines for their release.
