We are innocent of student's death - Kpando police

Police in the Kpando district in the Volta Region have disclosed to Citi News that they are innocent of allegations connecting them to the death of student Lawrence Adiase.

According to the police, investigations are currently ongoing to establish the true cause of the death of the boy.

Lawrence Adiase, a student of Havé Technical Institute in the Volta Region, is reported to have been beaten to death by personnel of the Police Service in the area.

The student is reported to have died in the early hours of Monday, March 18, 2013.

The Police Administration has expressed concern about the way a section of the media has carried the story.

In a statement signed by ASP Gloria Donkor, a team of investigators from Police Intelligence and Professional Standards have been deployed to investigate and ascertain the facts of the incident and appealed to the general public to exercise restraint as investigations continue.

Below is the full statement:

The police administration has noted with concern a news story carried by a section of the media that a 19-year-old student of the Have Technical Institute, Lawrence Adiase, died in the Kpando Police cells.

The police administration wishes to state that a team of investigators from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) are already on the ground to thoroughly investigate the incident to ascertain the facts.

We wish to assure the general public that any group of persons found culpable would be dealt with accordingly.

While sympathising with the bereaved family, the Police would want to entreat the general public, students of the schools involved, and especially parents of the student to exercise maximum restraint as investigations continue.
