Coaltar (E/R), March 13, GNA - Eleven communities in the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District, have been hit by severe water shortage following the drying up of rivers in the area.

The communities are Onarkwaase, Asabrekrom, Dentukrom, Kwadjo Tawiah, Yaw Owiredu, Yeboakrom, Kwame Pimpongkrom, Danquah Villa, Aboagyekrom, Yaw Manfokrom and Adu Appiahkrom.

Nana Adu Appiah, Chief farmer of Onarkwaase and Nana Appiah Gyampo, Mmrantehene of Asabrekrom told GNA at Coaltar that River Onarkwa, the main source of good drinking water has dried up.

They said people in the communities including school children have to walk more than seven kilometres to fetch water from River Ayensu, at Kofi Pare. Mr Stephen Kwame Sarpong, Secretary of Onarkwaasi-Asabrekrom Town Development Committee, said it is feared that guinea worm may re-surface in the area as a result of the water problem.

He appealed to the District Assembly and the Akropong Water Aid, an NGO to sink boreholes in the area.
