The Ghana Police Service announced the withdrawal of its personnel and the closure of the Police Station at Kukurantumi, a community in the Eastern Region, following an order by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

The order of the IGP, according to a statement issued by the Police on September 21, 2025, came after the youth of the community attacked the police station over the death of a suspect arrested for stealing.

The Police indicated that after the demise of the suspect, the youth attacked the police station and its barracks and even attempted to set the buildings ablaze.

Videos of the attack on the police station and the barracks, which have gone viral, show the youth of Kukurantumi going on a rampage.

Several reports indicated that the angry youth stormed the police station in retaliation for their colleague, accusing the Police of foul play.

The videos showed the local youth pelting stones and other objects at the police station and barracks and setting parts of the facility ablaze.

The police officers and their families captured in the video were running for cover and hiding behind some buildings.

A report by GBC indicated that the situation escalated when reinforcement teams from the Eastern Regional Police Command's Counter Terrorism Unit, together with officers from the Akyem Tafo Police Division, arrived at the scene. Instead of restoring calm, they were met with heavy resistance, as the irate youth pelted them with stones.

The clash left two police officers injured, both sustaining wounds after being hit by stones. Also, two police operational vehicles — a Toyota Tundra (GP 4004) and a Toyota Hilux belonging to the Eastern Regional Police Operations Commander — had their windshields shattered.
