A taskforce from the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has dismantled unauthorised structures at the Atomic Roundabout during a decongestion exercise, only to discover a makeshift school operating under the overpass.

The team was at the roundabout to clear the area of squatters and hawkers operating without authorisation when they came across the school, where children were seated behind tables with books in front of them.

A video shared by Citi FM showed the children seated in the makeshift classroom with whiteboards mounted as the task force arrived.

Some appeared confused by the sudden activity and tried to run away but were called back by the officials and guided to safety.

The woman who was believed to be running the makeshift school was seen being questioned by the officials.

The video also showed hawkers being asked to leave the area, while the taskforce cleared food stalls and dismantled furniture and other items kept at the site.

The exercise forms part of efforts to decongest the area and remove unauthorised structures around the busy roundabout.

The video has since sparked reactions from some Ghanaians, who have questioned how long the makeshift school had been operating at the site and why authorities had not noticed it earlier, despite the potential dangers of the location.
