Watch as IGP, POMAB assess officers' readiness for Akwatia by-election deployment

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have arrived at the High-Risk Operations Training Centre at Akyerematen in the Eastern Region, to assess the readiness of officers ahead of deployment for the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 3, 2025.

A video shared on Channel One TV’s X page on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, captured the arrival of the IGP at the training centre.

The Akwatia by-election follows the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi on Monday, July 7, 2025.

His victory was marred by allegations of vote buying and electoral irregularities, prompting the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to file a legal challenge.

The Koforidua High Court subsequently issued an interim injunction preventing him from acting as MP.

Kumi was later cited for contempt of court after allegedly defying the injunction, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest.

However, on June 11, 2025, the Supreme Court overturned the High Court’s ruling.

According to the apex court, the lower court had acted without jurisdiction, as the Electoral Commission had not yet gazetted the election results.

The Supreme Court subsequently quashed the contempt ruling, the bench warrant, and all related orders, and barred the presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, from taking further action.

The ruling reaffirmed legitimacy of the MP, weeks before his untimely passing.
