Wage Increases Not Expected Until April

A Senior Government Spokesman has announced that the expected increase in wages will not come off until April and not all public sector workers will benefit.

?Government is still considering wage increase but it will be tied to job description for specific groups of workers?.

The official told the BUSINESS & FINANCIAL TIMES that quite apart form the fact that government?s spending for the first three months of 2003 has already been decided, much is yet to be done before wage increases take effect.

According to him, any increase in wage will not be backdated. He attributed the delay in wage increase to on-going reforms in the public sector and said government is working at devising a payroll system aimed at self checking wages based on labour cost.
