Voting progressing in GJA election

Accra, July 9, GNA - Voting is progressing smoothly on Thursday throughout the country in an election by members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to elect a new National Treasurer. The candidates are Mrs Esi Asante, a freelance journalist and Mrs Linda Asante-Agyei, a Senior Reporter of the Ghana News Agency. Voting will end 1700 hours. Officials of the Electoral Commission are helping to conduct the election.

According to the GJA Elections Committee the results would be declared at every polling station at the close of voting, while collation to declare the winner would be done at the Ghana International Press Centre.

It said in a statement issued on Tuesday that proxy voting would be allowed only upon the production of a duly signed authority note from the member to the Elections Committee identifying his/her proxy. At the close of nominations on Wednesday, June 24, Mr Ransford Tetteh, Editor of the Daily Graphic, was returned unopposed as President.

Mr Affail Monney, Head of News, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Mr Bright Kwame Blewu, a freelance journalist and Mr Dave Agbenu, Chief Reporter, New Times Corporation, were also returned unopposed as Vice President, General Secretary and Organising Secretary respectively. Mr Mathias Tibu, Assistant Registrar (Publications) Ghana Institute of Journalism, was returned unopposed as the new Public Affairs Manager. 9 July 09
