Voters register: EC attempts to redeem image after ‘messy’ first day of registration

EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa

After a rather chaotic and uneventful turnout of events on the first day of compilation of the new voters register, the Electoral Commission headed by Jean Mensa has moved to redeem its image and prevent further denigration of the exercise.

Following several months of tough legal impediments about the propriety of the compilation of a new voters register, the Supreme Court finally gave the Electoral Commission the nod to proceed.

On the basis of keeping strict adherence to safety protocols, the Electoral Commission proceeded to set June 30, 2020, to commence the compilations process.

But as if the EC was not adequately prepared, the fortunes of the process was entirely clouded by reports of chaos, frustration, anger, and confusion in some registration centres across the country.

Some of the chaotic scenes were captured under the following headlines; “EC officials struggle to control crowd at Ketu South”, “Chaos at voter registration centres as applicants disregard coronavirus protocols”, “Voters register: People stranded in Wa as process delays” and several others.

However, in a series of tweets and publications in the subsequent days, the Electoral Commission has moved to rectify its errors and fixed its ‘broken promises’ to the Ghanaian people.

The tweets which were posted with the official handle of the Electoral Commission sought to clarify some misconceptions about the ongoing process.

The EC showed pictures from some centres across the country including Ashanti Region, Northern Region and Central Region where they claimed the process concluded without hitches.

While doing so, the Commission also expressed satisfaction with the turnout so far indicating their willingness to ensure adherence thereafter.
