Births and Deaths Registry in the Volta Region failed to meet its projected registration target of 76,341 for births and 25,809 deaths for the year 2018.

Mr. John Yalmon Badengbanoya, the Regional Director said though the Registry had only 48,807 births in 2018, it was an improvement on the 32,000 recorded in 2017.

He attributed the failure to meet the target set by the Ghana Statistical Service to lack of staff to man all 25 districts and municipalities in the Region.

Mr. Badengbanoya said the Registry needed logistics including motorbikes to get to people in difficult to reach communities and educate them on the need to register new births and the dead.

He said the Registry was engaging some nurses in hard to reach areas for information on new births and the dead.

The Regional Director said his outfit was also working with volunteers in remote areas to ensure that all births and deaths were registered.

He called for support from the National Commission on Civic Education, the media and other stakeholders to educate the citizenry on births and deaths registration to meet targets set for 2019.
