Volta Police Command avert bloodshed at Nyagbo

Ho, May 12, GNA-The Volta Police Regional Command early Tuesday morning moved swiftly to prevent a simmering inter-community conflict in the Nyagbo Traditional Area, in the Hohoe Municipal area from escalating.

A source at the Police Command told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) the police had contained the situation and dispersed the combatants.

He said the disagreement centred on the decision of the chiefs and people of Emli-Baze to opt out of the Nyagbo Traditional Area.

The source said pursuant to that decision, the Emli-Baze community, about three years ago, erected a signpost which announced the birth of the Emli-Baze Traditional area and also sought to suggest boundary limits of the Nyagbo Traditional Area.

He said the controversy raged on and finally got to the Regional House of Chiefs for adjudication.

He said the defacing of the sign post last week re-ignited the conflict.

The source said attempts by the Emli-Baze Community to re-do the sign post raised tension between the sides.

Early Tuesday morning, a group suspected to be from nearby Nyagbo-Odumase massed around the house of the Regent of Emli-Baze triggering a confrontation in which Mr Godwin Korsi Tusah, the Regent and his son Delali Anyomi got injured and on admission at a Kpando Hospital.

The source said peace had returned to the area and that police were investigating all breaches of the law during the confrontation.
