Ho, June 23, GNA - The Volta Disability Network (VODIN) on Tuesday appealed to the government to provide resources for the National Council on Persons with Disabilities to be effective. A statement issued in Ho to mark the third year of the passage of the Persons with Disability Act 2006 (Act 715) on Tuesday said, this only, would show government's commitment to tackling problems of the disabled.
The statement signed by Mr Francis Asong, the Secretary, said VODIN, which is a network of disability groups in the Volta Region, wanted regional and district offices of the Council established without delay in accordance with the Act.
It also demanded the implementation of the policy of free education for People with Disabilities (PWDs) as stated in the act. The statement also demanded that henceforth Municipal and District Assemblies in the region involve the disabled in all issues concerning them especially the process to enable them (disables) access all budgetary allocations.
"There should be nothing about us without us," it stated. The statement also wants "all statutory local government agencies including banks, schools, churches and other public places made accessible to people with disability with appropriate facilities like access ramps, as well as sign language and Braille".
