Vice President's Visit Scuttles NDC's Campaign

The Navrongo police has caused a disruption in the opposition NDC’s campaign plans with a directive that it re-schedules some planned rallies because of the presence of the Vice President in the area.

The NDC, the PNC, DPP and the ruling NPP are vying for the vacant Navrongo central parliamentary seat scheduled for Tuesday.

Superintendent D. S. Sampana in charge of the Navrongo police in a letter to the NDC asked the party to re-schedule rallies in five communities scheduled for Friday and Saturday. This is because the police do not have enough personnel to detail to the rallies and at the sometime ensuring the security of the Vice President.

The Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama is on a working visit to the Upper East region. Executives of the constituency branch of the NDC have interpreted the police action as a deliberate attempt to scuttle their campaign.

The party’s communications director, John Mahama told JOY FM in a telephone interview from Navrongo that the police directive has made things difficult for the party.

He said the NDC as a law abiding party obliged to the directive from the police. The party has therefore rescheduled its rallies to the Saturday evening and Sunday, which is the last day of campaigning for the by-election.

Mr Mahama however wondered why the vice President’s presence in the Upper East Region has been lebelled as a working visit when infact, he is campaigning for the NPP’s candidate in the Navrongo by-election. ''It is clear that his visit to the Upper East Region has to do with the Navrongo by-election. And he has the right to do so because he is a member of the NPP. But I think he must come out more openly to campaign rather than disguising it as a one-week visit,'' Mr Mahama added.
