VRA’s request for tariff increment is ill-timed - Adu Asare

The immediate past Member of Parliament for Adentan Constituency, Kwadwo Adu Asare has described as inopportune, the request by the Volta River Authority (VRA) for an upward adjustment in tariffs.

The VRA is suggesting an increase in tariffs, to help electricity providers in the country to solve the current power crisis.

Head of Public Relations, Mr. Fletcher maintained, the tariffs will help the VRA in its projects and to add at least 200 megawatts of energy every year.

But speaking on Adom TV’s morning show, Badwam Tuesday, Mr. Adu Asare said Ghanaians were already unhappy with the ongoing load shedding exercise, hence, any increment in tariffs will be greeted with anger.

According to the former NDC MP, the move could also be a ploy by the Authority to create discomfort for the government.

Meanwhile, members of the youth wing of opposition New Patriotic Party, Young Patriots, have served notice they will be forced to drag the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to court, if utility tariffs are increased.

The group suspects the power providers- Volta River Authority, Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Company Limited- of lobbying the PURC to agree to an increment in utility tariffs.

This, in the estimation of Young Patriots, will worsen the plight of ordinary Ghanaians who are already complaining about fuel price increments.
