VRA Gives 286 Poles For South Tongu Electrification Project

Accra, Aug. 4, - The Volta River Authority has released 286 poles valued at 107 million cedis to the South Tongu district for community electrification projects. The consignment is part of 400 poles the Authority promised the communities in the lower Volta basin who became worse off as a result of the construction of the Akosombo dam. Mr Kenneth Dzirasah, member of parliament for the area, said this when he addressed a delegates conference of the Agave youth association in Accra at the weekend. He said additionally, the VRA has agreed in principle to finance the extension of potable water from the water project at Agordome to towns and villages along the pipeline and provide boreholes and dug-outs for those far away from the line. These new initiatives, he explained, are to address some of the difficulties which were created with the construction of the Akosombo dam. Mr Kenneth Dzirasah who is also the first deputy speaker of parliament, said the South Tongu district has continued to labour under adverse effects since the inception of the dam. The Agave youth association conference, which brought together assembly members and prominent citizens in the district, was used to introduce the new chief executive, Mr Christian Sackley, the presiding member, Mr Austin Ablordeppey, to the delegates who discussed ongoing development projects in the district.
