Use of Dr Title Saga: Hassan Ayariga faces off with GTEC boss on live TV

Ayariga (L) accuses Prof Jinapor (R) of lying about sending him a letter to prove his ‘Dr’ title Ayariga (L) accuses Prof Jinapor (R) of lying about sending him a letter to prove his ‘Dr’ title

The founder of the All Peoples Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, clashed with the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof Ahmed Jinapor, over the brouhaha surrounding his use of the doctoral title.

During a panel discussion on JoyNews PM Express on August 18, 2025, Prof Jinapor indicated that his outfit's demand for some public figures to show proof of the academic titles they have been using does not amount to a witch hunt.

'Bring your CV, so we compare it with mine' - Dr Ayensu-Danquah fires GTEC boss

He said that in the case of the former presidential candidate, a letter was given to him to show proof of his PhD credentials, but it has not been done.

“In the case of my good senior brother, Hassan Ayariga, he has two honorary doctorates and he says he has a PhD. We are not even going after the honorary doctorate; we are saying that if you have a PhD, produce evidence. If you produce the evidence, and that evidence is verifiable and authentic, you can use your doctorate title.

“We have written to him. He has written back to us officially. What is the means of writing? The means of writing is communication. He's communicated a lot to us and he knows that GTEC has flagged his professorship,” Prof Jinapor said.

Reacting to this, Hassan Ayariga said that he had not been given any letter by GTEC on the matter.

Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah does not hold the title of 'professor' in any capacity - GTEC

He indicated that the only reason he has not provided evidence of his academic credentials is because of the way GTEC was handling the matter, by sharing the so-called letter they issued to him with the media.

“With all due respect to my younger brother, that is not true. If that was true, we wouldn't have been here. How long will it take me to provide a piece of paper?... How long will it take me to go into my wardrobe and pull out a piece of paper that is written there PhD, to give it to you? How long will it take?

“But the way you destroyed my reputation by telling people you wrote to me, and the letter is in the media, and I never received it. Can you prove to the world that you have given me a letter? I dare you to prove that you handed me a letter… Do you have proof that you have given me a letter? Do you have proof?” he fumed.

He added that his response to GTEC was to question them on the letter which they supposedly wrote to him, but found its way to the media.
