Professor Kwesi Kwaa Prah, Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS), based in South Africa has criticized the use of the English language as a medium of instruction in primary schools.

He advocated that, indigenous languages, based on the location of the schools be used at least for the first three years in basic schools.

Prof. Prah who made the observation at a press conference in Accra yesterday said, if this concept is implemented, it would enhance the learning of the English language and other foreign languages, and thus enable Ghanaians have a better understanding of their own languages and culture.

The lecturer, who is on a two-day visit to the country, held seminars at the ongoing Education Fair (EDUFAIR) at the Trade Fair Site in Accra, during which he addressed critical issues concerning a language policy for Ghana.

Professor K.K Prah attributed the inability of educators and policymakers to implement a language policy to educational, cultural, political and economic reasons.

He called on the government to implement a pilot project on the subject and examine its impact on the nation. He also called on UNESCO, World Bank, Internal Monetary Fund (IMF) and other donor agencies to support the initiative.
