The Upper West Regional Police Command, through the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has intensified efforts to promote road safety and reduce road traffic crashes in the region under an ongoing exercise dubbed “Operation Safe Lives.”

On Monday, 2 June 2026, a team led by the Upper West Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Alhaji Iddi Ziblim, and supported by personnel from the unit, embarked on a road safety enforcement and public education exercise within the Wa Municipality.

The operation focused on educating motorists, motorcyclists, and other road users on the importance of complying with road traffic regulations, particularly the mandatory use of crash helmets by motorcycle riders and passengers. The exercise also targeted unregistered motorcycles operating within the municipality.

Speaking during the operation, ASP Alhaji Iddi Ziblim emphasised that the initiative was necessitated by the increasing number of road traffic accidents recorded in the Upper West Region. He noted that strict enforcement of road safety regulations remains critical in safeguarding lives and reducing preventable injuries and fatalities on the roads.

As part of the enforcement exercise, twenty (20) motorcyclists were arrested for riding without crash helmets. The offenders were subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate's Court, where they were convicted and fined fifty (50) penalty units each.

Additionally, the court issued bench warrants for four (4) accused persons who failed to appear before the court to answer charges related to traffic offences.

The Upper West Regional Police Command wishes to remind all road users that compliance with road traffic regulations is a shared responsibility and urges motorists and motorcyclists to observe all safety measures, particularly the use of approved crash helmets, to protect lives and property.

The Command remains committed to ensuring safer roads and will continue to undertake similar operations across the region.
