Upper West GT Staff support sale of GT

Wa, Aug. 11, GNA - Some concerned staff of Ghana Telecom in the Upper West Region on Monday staged a two-hour demonstration to press home their unflinching support for the sale of the facility to Vodafone a United Kingdom Telecommunication Company. The demonstration was meant to prevail on Parliament to bury their political considerations and approve the sale of Ghana Telecom. Mr. Carl Nii Amankwah Addo, leader of the group, said Ghana Telecom was in a distress condition where capital infusion alone was inadequate to enhance its efficiency.

He said current trend in the telecommunication business world made it mandatory for Ghana Telecom to belong to an international group to reap the benefits associated with such partnership.

"We support the sale of Ghana Telecom because in December 2000, Onetouch was rated number one mobile network in the country but just eight years down the line it has dropped to number three position," Mr Amankwah said.

Mr Amankwah who is also the Public Relations Officer at Ghana Telecom said some of Ghana Telecom billing and switching systems were inefficient and outmoded, a situation that had created serious revenue linkages.

He said the equipment of Ghana Telecom needed to be replaced but it lacked funds to procure them.

"There is a clear need for capital injection to enhance more efficiency and quality of products and services", he explained.
