A group of nurses and midwives recruited in 2020 has issued a distress call to President John Dramani Mahama, pleading for the payment of up to eight months’ worth of outstanding salaries and arrears.

The health professionals, under the banner of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, say the prolonged delays have pushed them into severe financial distress.

At a press conference held in Ejisu on Monday, August 18, 2025, Nana Agyei Sikapa, organizer of the coalition, revealed that hundreds of health workers posted across the country have been working without pay for several months.

He described the situation as dire, noting that many affected professionals are unable to meet basic needs.

“Our members are surviving on loans and handouts. Some are starving, yet we are expected to care for the sick. It’s disheartening,” he lamented.

The coalition warned that if the arrears are not cleared soon, many of the affected workers may be forced to abandon their posts, a situation that could cripple healthcare delivery in parts of the country.

The unpaid nurses and midwives are appealing directly to President Mahama to intervene and ensure the Ministry of Finance releases the necessary funds to bring immediate relief.
