University of Glasgow honours President

President J. J. Rawlings has received an honourary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Glasgow during his six-day official visit to the United Kingdom.

A citation read by Professor Malcom Meleod, Professor of African Studies and Vice-President for External Relations recognised the role of the President Rawlings in the positive changes that have taken place in Ghana since he began to direct the destiny of Ghana some 20 years ago.

Earlier, President Rawlings addressed the 129-member Scottish Parliament. He warned that as long as poverty, inequalities and social injustice persist, there cannot be a favourable endowment for good democratic governance in the third world.

He told the MPs that good governance goes to the heart of the issue - the well being and basic human rights of our people President Rawlings receiving his parchment from the Chancellor of the University of Glasgow after the conferment of the Doctor of Law degree at the University's Hall.
