University of Ghana Law School appeals for funds to host 2018 Moot Court Competiton

The University of Ghana School of Law has called on the general public and benevolent individuals to provide financial assistance as it makes preparations to host the 27th edition of the All African Human Rights Moot Court competition.

Addressing the audience at the launch of the competition, the Dean of the School of Law, Professor Edward Kofi Quashigah, disclosed that the School of Law intends to organize fundraising events in order to generate enough funds to fulfill local expenses.

“In organizing these Moots, the host University has some responsibilities, one of which is to take care of the local expenses. For that purpose, we would have to undertake extensive fundraising. We will humbly approach those with the good heart to support this venture and we shall be extremely grateful for any assistance, no matter how small”, Professor Quashigah said.

The Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law also emphasized the economic benefits the host university, and equally the host nation, is likely to enjoy, thus the need for the general public to assist the institution in hosting the competition. He added that the School of Law will be hosting over 75 law faculties all over Africa.

“The Moot would be expected to bring in students and lecturers from over 75 law faculties from all over Africa. The economic value to the country is obvious and of course, the exposure of the country to young Africans is a plus for the image of Ghana”, he elaborated.

The All African Human Rights Moot Court competition brings together all law faculties in Africa, whose top students argue a hypothetical human rights cases as if they were before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The Competition aims to prepare a new generation of lawyers to argue cases of alleged human rights violations before the African Court.

The 27th edition of the All African Human Rights Moot Court competition will take place in August 2018.

The 2017 edition was organised by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius from 18 to 23 September 2017 in Réduit, Mauritius. It was won by the University of Ghana team made up of Kobby Afari Yeboah and Sarah Gyimah, who are currently in their final year.
