University Of Ghana Diaspora Linkage Programme (UG-DLP)

The University of Ghana is establishing a pilot Diaspora Linkage Programme (UG-DLP) under its Next Generation of African Academics project funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

UG has embarked on an intensive development of its younger faculty who do not hold PhDs or other terminal degrees; and expansion of its post-graduate programme from the current 6% of total student population to 20% in the next five years. The drive to increase post-graduate student recruitment, however, is constrained by the limited number of senior faculty to teach graduate programmes and supervise thesis research. The UG-DLP therefore seeks to promote partnerships with Ghanaian professors in the Diaspora that will enable UG to draw on the expertise of academics in partner universities abroad to enhance its faculty strength for post-graduate teaching, supervision and thesis examination. It is expected that such partnerships will lead also to collaborative research that will enhance research productivity.
The pilot University of Ghana-Diaspora Linkages Programme will establish links with existing Ghana Diaspora Networks and individual Ghanaian professors working in universities abroad. Our expectation is that the Ghanaian professors in the Diaspora will obtain the endorsement from their universities to use their leave/sabbatical periods to support UG. Selected professors must be available to spend a minimum of one month, but ideally one to two semesters at UG, and must be willing to teach graduate courses, supervise MPhil/PhD students, examine student theses and engage in research, ideally in collaboration with UG faculty. Our expectation is that this arrangement will provide additional faculty time input to enhance teaching and research at UG and support the development of new post-graduate programmes.
With the funds provided by Carnegie, UG will cover air ticket of selected professors and provide a small daily allowance to cover costs in Ghana. UG will also endeavour to provide accommodation on campus where necessary.
