United States congratulates Ghanaians

The United States on Saturday congratulated the people of Ghana for the successful completion of the presidential run-off on December 28. A statement issued in Accra by the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy described the elections as "generally transparent and fair."

It said "this landmark event provides further evidence of the democratic values and institutions that are taking root in Ghana, and strengthens Ghana's leadership position as it prepares for a peaceful transfer of power." The statement commended the Electoral Commission for its actions to ensure a voting process that allowed the will of the electorate to prevail. "We look forward to working with President-elect John Kufuor and his administration to pursue the common interests of the United States and Ghana in a spirit of co-operation and mutual respect."

The statement urged the new parliament to work constructively with one another, adding that, "Mr Kufuor should work to address the issues that are important to the people and the future of Ghana''.

It said the acceptance of the electoral results by Professor John Atta Mills and the National Democratic Congress underscores the commitment to democratic values and tolerance by all Ghanaians
