United States Coastal Patrol Ship Docks At Tema Harbour

Tema (Greater Accra) 18 Nov. The United States Coastal Patrol Ship, USS Typhoon, under the command of Lt. Roger Whewks docked at Tema Harbour today to begin a five-day friendly visit to Ghana. The ship with four officers and 26 men, left the port of NAB Little Creek, Virginia in the U.S on October 3rd, and has already called at Doaula, Cameroun, and Lome, Togo. Lt. Whewks told newsmen that the ship's primary function is to perform coastal patrol and interdiction, with a secondary mission of naval warfare support. He explained that the primary employment mission include forward presence, export operation, counter narcotic interdictions and foreign internal defence. While in Ghana the Commanding Officer will call on the Officer-In-Charge of the Eastern Naval Command, Captain Niii Sampa Nunno, and Commander of the Ghana Navy, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah. They will also engage in sporting activities. In another development, a tourist ship, M-VCSS-ALBATROS, carrying 400 tourists, also berthed at Tema Harbour today to enable some of her passenger to visit some tourist sites in Ghana. Some then left in state transport company buses for the Akuapim Hills. According to some members of the crew, the ship set off on November 2nd, 1997, from Cape Town and called at a couple of ports before docking at Tema. She leaves Tema tonight for Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire, and will return finally to ort Dremerhasen, Germany, on November 30, 1997.
