Unifil Ghanbatt Headquarters Commissioned

The Army Commander Maj. Gen C.B. Yaache commissioned Ghanbatt's new headquarters in South Lebanon when he led a five-man delegation to the Medal Presentation Parade of Ghanbatt 55.

Ghanbatt's headquarters was located in Al-Qaranis township, but due to the reconfiguration of UNIFIL, it was relocated in Tibnine township. The new headquarters was named "Obeng Camp" after the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. S.K. Obeng. Lt. Gen. Obeng was the eighth Force Commander of UNIFIL serving from 01 December 1999 to 15 May 2001.

Reading a citation, the Deputy Commanding Officer (DCO) of the Ghanaian Battalion Maj. Alhassan Abu said during Lt. Gen. Obeng's tenure with UNIFIL he made a positive impact on the achievement of peace in Southern Lebanon. He said the CDS' outstanding contribution to peacekeeping has seen dramatic development in UNIFIL Area of Operation, including the Israeli withdrawal from the controlled areas of Southern Lebanon. "His professional acumen, commitment and zeal to achieve results have endeared him to the Lebanese authorities, the UNIFIL fraternity and all peace loving people in UNIFIL Area of Operation," he added.

Ghana has contributed troops to peacekeeping operations in Lebanon since 1978.
