Unemployed jailed 30 years for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday sentenced Shadrack Mensah, unemployed, to 30 years imprisonment for robbery.

Shadrack pleaded not guilty, but the court after the trial, found him guilty of the offence.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Patrick Morkeh, told the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri that the complainant in the case is a level 400 law student of the University of Ghana.

He said on April 28, at about 0750 whilst the complainant was on her way to lectures on the Evandy-Pentagon road, the convict attacked her and snatched her bag containing an Acer laptop, two mobile phones, as well as an amount of Ghc52.00, books, lecture notes and handouts.

DSP Morkeh said in her attempt to resist the attack, the convict over-powered the complainant and slashed her thigh with a knife.

He said Mensah ran into a nearby bush, and the complainant's shout for help attracted the Legon security men on patrols.

“The security men then organised a search, arrested the convict, and retrieved the items mentioned from him.

He said the victim was sent to the police station whereupon interrogation, he was charged with the crime.
